INESC TEC (Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science) is a private non-profit research institution, dedicated to scientific research and technological development, technology transfer, advanced consulting and training, and pre-incubation of new technology-based companies.

As an institution operating at the interface of the academic and business areas, bringing closer together academia, companies, public administration, and society, INESC TEC typically applies the knowledge and results generated as part of its research in technology transfer projects, seeking value creation and immediate social relevance.

Present in sites in the cities of Porto, Braga and Vila Real, INESC TEC encompasses 13 R&D Centres, structured according to four thematic domains – Networked Intelligent Systems, Power and Energy, Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Computer Science – with complementary competencies. Through different fields of intervention, such as Agro-food, Energy, Health, Industry and Sea, INESC TEC aims to connect to the markets and address the challenges of economy and society.

35 years of history, heading for the future

INESC in the city of Porto was established in 1985, and it has managed to secure an important position in the National Scientific System over the years, with INESC as its reference, in a holding-type structure that is to this day an important model in the form of a University-Industry relationship.

As an Associate Laboratory since 2002, and Technological Interface Centre since 2018, INESC TEC is a dynamic and innovative organisation, based on criteria of efficiency and effectiveness, strongly investing in the valorisation of its R&D activities, namely by promoting technology-based business initiatives.

Simultaneously, INESC TEC honours its academic background, always promoting a close relationship with U.Porto, P.Porto, UMinho, UTAD, U.Aberta and IPB, investing in advanced training and R&D, and encouraging the development of a large number of MSc and PhD theses. INESC TEC always strives to be a source of innovation and dynamism, thus contributing to the country’s progress and development.

Centre for Applied Photonics

The Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP) is one of the 13 R&D Centres of INESC TEC. CAP performs R&D in applied photonics, principally focusing on optical fibre technology.

CAP is oriented towards applied research and development in optical fibre sources, optical fibre communication, optical fibre sensors and microfabrication (thin films and integrated optics).

CAP’s group is always looking for opportunities for technology transfer to industrial companies using its specific competencies in optoelectronics and systems integration.
