National Preliminary Registration
Only one team per country/region can be sent to PLANCKS 2021 to allow more countries/regions to participate in this unique physics hackathon edition. Because of this, some countries/regions organise a preliminary competition to determine who will participate in PLANCKS.
The following countries/regions are hosting a preliminary PLANCKS competition. If you are a national of one of these countries/regions, you must register through their event and participate in the preliminary, to try and take part in PLANCKS 2021.

If you are the organiser of a preliminary competition of an IAPS NC/LC and your preliminary is not yet on this list, please fill in the following form. You can find more information about preliminaries and on how to organise one in the Preliminaries Booklet we have prepared. Any question, please email us at oc2021@plancks.org.
Individual Team Registration
If your country/region is not in the list above, you can still register as an individual team.
There will be two rounds of registration for individual teams. The deadlines are the following:
- 1st round: 1 December 2020 – 17 January 2021
- 2nd round: 1 February – 14 March (Pi day) 2021
If more individual teams from a certain country/region than the allowed number (one team per country/region) register during the first and second round of registration, we will recommend to those countries/regions the organisation of a preliminary.
If no such preliminary can be organised, the seats will be decided by a draw. Here the teams that registered during the first round will have priority.
Teams Registration Fee
The registration fee is 5โฌ per participant (20โฌ for a team of four physics students). Information on the payment process will be sent to the teams after confirmation of their placement in the event.
It will include participation access to all of the planned activities, access to the PLANCKS 2021 Discord for communicating with other participants, chance of winning one of the three PLANCKS 2021 prizes by competing, possibility of interaction with Guest Lecturers and Workshop Leaders and unique items of PLANCKS 2021 #PLANCKATHON merchandise delivered to your team.
If you are not yet a member of IAPS, either through a National Committee (NC), Local Committee (LC) or as an Individual Member (IM), you will have to become one to participate in PLANCKS 2021. If you are not eligible to be part of a NC or LC, you will have to register with IAPS as an IM and pay the membership fee of 10โฌ. This process will be handled directly with IAPS, after each round of registration closes and your team is selected to participate. Do not forget that this fee also allows you to take part in all the other IAPS events and activities!
PLANCKS 2021 Global Grant
To help with the registration fees and guarantee a truly worldwide event, IAPS is willing to support the participation of some teams in this unique edition of PLANCKS, by covering the registration fee of all members of the awarded the teams. The goal is to allow any student and team, independently of their background and financial status, to attend this physics hackathon.
Up to 10 grants will be available, and the application is competitive. Priority will be given to teams with financial hardship. The selection of the winning teams, and the award of the grant, is made at the discretion of the Executive Committee of IAPS and of the Organising Committee of PLANCKS 2021. It will consider the motivation of the students in taking part in PLANCKS 2021 and the creativity of the video. Follow the below link for more information.
Observer Registration
Were you organising a preliminary competition? Are you not able to compete this year? Well, if you still want to join PLANCKS 2021 for the Guest Lectures, Workshops and Social activities, you can do it!
As an Observer, you won’t compete, and just observe the competition, but you will have access to the above mentioned activities! This type of participation is free and you can register until 25 April 2021 (Liberty Day in Portugal!).
However, if you also want to receive a merchandise kit, with all the goodies the competing students will also receive, you need to register in the same link and tell us of your interest in the goodies until 14 March 2021. To receive the goodie bag, you need to pay a fee of 25โฌ, that will cover the goodies and shipping to where you live.
This process will be handled directly with IAPS, after each round of registration closes. Do not forget that this fee also allows you to take part in all the other IAPS events and activities!
Merchandise Kit
As you may know, every team will receive a kit with merchandise for all team members. Observers can also receive one if they wish to do so. We are keeping part of the merchandise kit as a surprise until you receive it, but below you can already find a brief sneak peek of what the merchandise we will be mailing you is!
